This year marked the 240th Anniversary of the Bermuda Gunpowder Plot and Belcario Thomas, our resident Accounts manager and expert on all things Tobacco Bay (the site of the historic event), was invited to a reception at Government House. What does one wear when meeting a representative of Her Majesty the Queen? When he put this question to the office, the answer was unanimous – The English Sports Shop.

“Because where else does one go for the ultimate pair of traditional Bermuda shorts?” The newly converted Belcario is preaching to the choir. This iconic Hamilton Store opened in 1918, establishing itself as the go-to for formal and business-casual attire, usually involving the eponymous short and knee high socks. When he returned looking remarkably dapper, we couldn’t resist grilling him on the experience.

“I walked in ten minutes before closing,” he confessed. “They were super attentive, extremely helpful, I was spoiled for choice.

“They actually helped put my entire look together, which I appreciated. And after finding the perfect form-fitting jacket, they suggested changing the buttons out, which was a very nice touch. So they found the perfect jacket, then they found the perfect buttons and, of course, these traditional Bermuda shorts.”

Though it was obvious, we had to ask: Why pink?

“They thought I would look pretty in pink,” he added, ever the stoic.

And the unconventional royal blue socks?

“You can’t really rock the formal Bermuda uniform without the socks and I thought they were a bold choice to go with the light pink.” Because that’s the sort of unconventional guy he is.

“Of course they steamed the jacket,” he added. “They promised to have it ready by noon the next day and it was. It was nicely presented in a garment bag.”
