It’s summer and whether you’re in Bermuda for a few precious days of well-earned vacation or you’re enjoying a ‘staycation’ here on your Island home, The Bookmart at Brown & Co. has everything you need to make the most of your free time.
Bermuda Travel Guides
There are many of these in print but we think the best are ‘Fodor’s Bermuda’, compiled by Bermudian writers Robyn Bardgett and Amy Peniston, and the ‘Moon Guide to Bermuda’, written by Bermuda based journalist Rosemary Jones. Both are packed with information on what to see and do and full of handy hints and tips which will help get you well off the beaten track.
Bermuda From The Water
Getting out onto the water, as part of an organised trip, or – even better – in a boat you’ve hired yourself, is THE way to spend a glorious summers day. ‘Aquatic Bermuda’, by local writer and historian Sean Pol O’Creachmaoil, provides a unique offshore guide to these islands and contains a wealth of information on what you’ll see as you cruise through Bermuda’s maze of beautiful turquoise bays and inlets.
Walking Guides
Given it’s diminutive size, Bermuda contains a surprising amount of open space and secluded, unspoilt countryside. ‘Hiking Bermuda’, by Cecile Davidson and ‘Coastal Bermuda’, by Amy K Pearson, will help you to plan your way around on foot. Both contain detailed directions to a number of routes, which will take you to the most beautiful places on this most beautiful of islands without leaving you with blisters on your feet – you are on vacation after all!
Nature and Wildlife Guides
Our green and fertile Island and its surrounding waters are bursting with natural beauty. Year round the countryside is a blaze of colour, the sky thronged with birds and the sea teeming with fish. ‘The Naturalists Field Guide to Bermuda’, by Martin Thomas is a handy, pocket sized guide to the flora and fauna you’re likely to encounter whilst you’re out and about. If birds or fish are your particular interest we have laminated recognition cards describing each of the principle species and always a hit with our younger visitors.
Historic Architecture
Bermuda has a rich architectural heritage and some of the most important of its treasures are now cared for by the Bermuda National Trust. ‘Held In Trust’ provides beautiful photographs and carefully researched descriptions of these properties and their grounds.
