Remember Bermuda through a piece of art or antique

There has been the most wonderful cultural renaissance in Bermuda in the last twenty years. For a group of islands the geographical size of an American small town, the visual Arts in Bermuda has grown extraordinarily. In this short historical time, the Museum of Bermuda Art, Bermuda National Gallery, Bermuda Maritime Museum, the Arts Centre at Dockyard and Kaleidoscope Foundation have all taken root firmly in this island community.  Permanent exhibition spaces in private businesses, such as Ace Ltd, Colonial Insurance and the Common Ground, have established themselves along with the increase of working artists. The arts open people up; it cultivates a vital, creative, positive and enriching force in life.

In this four hundredth anniversary of the colonization of Bermuda, we celebrate the progress we are making toward a highly developed art-cultural community and destination. After the beaches, the parties, the clothes-buying and the dining out, there is always art. A visual feast often offers food for the soul. Many of the art museums and galleries are free or nominal admission, however the benefits are rich.  If taking home an example of local art is your desire, then you are spoiled for choice, never having the opportunity to see everything.

The visual arts in Bermuda are as diverse and as colorful as its people. Traditional paintings as well as modern works and all variations in between can be acquired, in some cases from the artists themselves. A number of quaint little artist/owner galleries, art studios and gift shops throughout the Island offer original oils, acrylics and watercolors. Lovely photographs, mixed media work and an array of limited and open edition prints are readily available. A piece of visual art, depicting the beauty and charm of Bermuda and its people, will undoubtedly bring you many pleasant memories of your vacation with us.

Bermuda houses many talented artists, many of whom can be visited at their studio/galleries island-wide.

Kitten Ellison at Bermuda Craft Market

This is where Kitten Ellison is most at home --- at her work table amongst other Bermudian artists in the Craft Market at the Royal Navy Dockyard. With a 'flick' of her wrist and her own blend of colours, she creates a multitude of art on china, clothing, glassware and jewelry. Having studied and taught Ikebana (Japanese flower arranging) for 17 years , a chance remark from a student asking me if I would be interested in learning the art of Sumie, started me on the road to my present business. Althougth Kitten is an accomplished painter, but she would probably admit that her first love is gardening, which is why it is not surprising that her art work on china, glass and fabrics brings to life the the beauty of the flowers and plants for which Bermuda is so famous.
