Historic Dockyard in the West End

The Royal Naval Dockyard at the tip of Ireland Island is a magnificent preservation of British history dating back to 1809.  Exactly 200 years later, Dockyard became Bermuda's primary cruise passenger port which means it is usually a high traffic area for visitors.  Dockyard is also easily accessible by bus or ferry for non-cruisers.

During the War of 1812, “American Refugee Negroes” (Free Blacks and Bermudian slaves) were hired as labourers and worked side by side to build the most important British naval base in the Atlantic. Others enrolled as troops to guard the Dockyard.  Later shipbuilding became the major industry for this area of the island.

Today the Royal Naval Dockyard has been converted into a lovely village of shops, art galleries, eateries and attractions while preserving Bermudian history.  The Clocktower Mall is a fabulous shopping mall full of boutiques and restaurants. The Bermuda Craft Market is located here as is the Frog & Onion, a restaurant steeped in history. Pottery, glass blowing, museums, dolphin exhibits and tours on Segway scooters are all happening in Dockyard.  It makes for a brilliant day trip.
