The 2,400-passenger Norwegian Gem will sail to Bermuda from New York in 2011. The Gem is one of Norwegian's largest and is its newest ship, debuting in October 2007.
It will replace the Norwegian Dawn and spend three days in port while here.
The Dawn will continue to sail to the island, but from Boston where it will replace the Norwegian Spirit. The 2,224-passenger Dawn will leave Boston on Fridays and will also spend three days at King's Wharf in Dockyard.
The 2,000-passenger Spirit will make New Orleans its home port.
The rotation of ships means the potential for 400 more passengers and 200 more crew members in Dockyard per week.
Based on spending averages from 2008, that could mean an extra $1.5 million spent in Bermuda.
In 2008, the average cruise passenger spent $143 per stay while the average crew spent $55 per stop. That would mean $1.3 million more in passenger spending and $240,000 more in crew spending.
"Our summer 2011 deployment is filled with exciting itineraries and new choices, so that our guests can enjoy Freestyle Cruising to a variety of destinations around the world during the popular summer travel season," said Kevin Sheehan, Norwegian's CEO.
